Why is golf so hard to learn?

Fred and Barney – Despite appearances, they were quite the scramble team.

Golf, like all sports, is a difficult game to play. It doesn’t always go your way in fact it goes your way less than other sports. I think before we decide why it’s hard we must make a distinction between playing golf and hitting the golf ball.

Hitting he golf ball should be a relatively easy task. We have a stick with a funny-looking end on it and a ball that is stationary. Just like Stifler says, “Whack away Jimbo, whack away.” For a right handed golfer, face the ball, swing the club back and over your right shoulder. Swing the golf club down and over your left shoulder letting the ball get in the way. Or, hit the ball with the bat.

Golf gets hard when we utilise the old brain pan. Us adults have adult thinking and that is called post-formal thought. Useful for writing PhD’s I should think but not really to propel a ball.

Playing the game becomes difficult, I think, because we think too much. Have you ever seen a kid play golf? They just play. They react to the shot at hand and play a shot to suit. They’re not consumed with what it will look like or who to impress. The best often describe their best golf as automatic. They just do it. What they’re doing is playing golf now. They’re not thinking about the next shot or the three putt on the last. The assess the ball/distance/conditions and hit the fucker. Rather like Aaron Baddeley putts. He sets up, has a look and hits it.

Next time you’re out playing golf – try two things.

  1. Decide how the shot will be, say it out loud and do it.
  2. Don’t fuck around. Once you have chosen a club – set up and hit the golf ball.

That’s caveman-golf, baby!

Play caveman golf, it’s so much more fun.
