The footy season kicks off tonight with the Highlanders taking on the Crusaders. I’m sure the woke brigade will still worried about The Crusades and the Crusaders having a negative appropriation towards various parts of society. If that’s the case then the Highlanders and their warring past will worry them. The Blues, of course, will negatively affect those of us with depression. Hurricanes kill people – shouldn’t have that as a name. The Chiefs is culturally insensitive.
Sorry, got off task a bit.
I find myself strangely apathetic to the Super Rugby season kicking off. Like, yer know? I just don’t care. Or, at least I thought. What is actually the case is that we see games dictated by idiotic rule changes and over-zealous refereeing. Let me point out that it isn’t the individual referee’s fault. They simply do what they are coached to do, which is seems is butcher the game. I’ve pointed out previously that spread defense leads to front on tackling. Front on tackling leads to head injuries. If a player suddenly dips into a tackle, what is the tackler meant to do? Disappear? Not tackle? Idiotic nonsense. The ref cops the lot because some law maker decided that rucks were just a pile of bodies that the ball was somewhere near and the half-back could handle it to his heart’s content without a wretched tight forward ruining things. “Through the gate!”, they say. What fucking gate? In general play? Are we suddenly sheep herding?
Anyway, I got off task again. Fuck it. Does Super Rugby conjure up the same feelings of regional pride that internationals and NPC games do? Probably not, unless you’re in Christchurch. And, even then the crowd numbers are dwindling. I think it would be a relatively easy fix though. Take the games to the regions represented more often. Whenever the Super Teams have visited the regions the rugby is well populated and great times had by all.
Let’s watch and see. I may be a little pessimistic about the whole thing. Here’s hoping for some great rugby and some new stars coming through. Good luck chaps.
BTW – my picks for his weekend are the Highlanders and Hurricanes.
