What do you get with some forward thinking, enthusiasm and a great list of sponsors?
The Charles Tour.
In particular this week, The Brian Green Property Group Super 6s. This will be played at the Manawatu Golf Club where it will be in fabulous shape and the greens will be superb. Super 6s is a format defined by some strokeplay qualifying rounds followed by 6 hole matches to finally determine a winner. Last year’s winner, Daniel Hillier, couldn’t make it this year.
Incredibly fun for the golfers and spectators alike. If you want to win, you’ll need birds. Lots of birds. Big ones and regular sized ones. With greens that pure, there will be many avian descriptions.
Manawatu is a short golf course by modern standards, but is tight. It requires you to hit it between the trees, which are uncomfortably close together at times, and hit the right parts of the small greens. Accurate drives and a sniper-like wedge game will be needed.
The field is headlined by perennial Shandon stalwart, Mark Brown. If you’ve ever seen why you’re not a playing pro – go watch Browny hit some balls. Local favourite and newly anointed tour pro, Trent Munn will be there complete with one of New Zealand’s finest mullets. All games aside, he’d be a good bet on winning. Josh Geary, Kerry Mountcastle, Mako Thompson, Gareth Paddison, Luke Toomey along with many others round out a very good field.
Good luck to all playing, caddying, ruling, mowing and volunteering and special thanks to the sponsors and the PGA for making it happen. If you’re in the area and want to see some great golf played at one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected tracks, get down there.
