Well gee whizz John, it was a weekend of sports.
I watched the insanity of the Phoenix Open where Rickie Fowler did his level best to throw it away before stoically beating Branden Grace.
The Superbowl was won by the Patriots – again.
The Black Caps folded to India.
The New Zealand Sevens teams – men and women – won the tournament in Sydney. Just quietly, Gayle Broughton is one of the best sevens players I have seen.
The Irish were well beaten by the Poms. Wales came back and beat the French. The Scots beat the Italians.
Sergio Garcia was DQed for damaging greens in Saudi Arabia. This is despicable. On Friday he wasn’t happy with a bunker shot and took to it as trying to kill a snake. Akin to a petulant toddler packing a tanty. He has then scuffed greens and apparently taken a divot with his putter on another. Hardly the actions of a Masters Champion and/or role model. I’m certainly not saying everyone has to be colourless and dull but this goes too far. Presumably he will have been fined by the European Tour, they are notoriously coy about their fines, I’m quite certain he should have been suspended. It seems incredible that Haotong Li was penalised for having his caddie stand behind him, which was the wrong call, Bryson DeChambeau takes almost 2 minutes to hit a shot with no penalty and this from Sergio Garcia which is paramount to vandalism gets a DQ and no farther sanction. It seems the powers that be need to get their heads together.
Dustin Johnson’s win is therefore overshadowed. Man, I’d love to hit my 2 iron like that guy.
I have a question for you; if I was to interview a sports star – what would you want to hear? Who would you want to hear from? Let’s hear some suggestions.
