New Zealand’s favourite sporting moment

I see the ten finalists have been named for New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment at The Halberg Awards.  They are (with sarcastic or sappy gushing commentary)

  1. Brendon McCullum – scores a record 302 against India (BLACKCAPS v India, 2nd Test, Basin Reserve, Wellington) Marvelous effort that. He scores 302 in front of his dad and a growing crowd. had the nation talking cricket and has almost singlehandedly turned NZ Cricket around.
  2. Men’s Team Sprint – win their first ever Track World Championship (2014 UCI Track World Championships, Cali, Columbia) Great stuff…did anyone notice? Was I hiding/sleeping? Oh, right – I don’t care. I should given that cycling is showing major growth here – but I just cant.
  3. Scott McLaughlin – ‘gives it the jandal’ in the opening round of the V8 Supercars (2014 Clipsal 500, Adelaide, Australia) Yeah yeah cars go round and round.
  4. Richie Patterson – leaves it to his final lift to win weightlifting gold (2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, Scotland) Fine performance – undoubtedly could lift and throw me across the room. And, to win a gold medal at the Com Games is great. But, do the games even count?
  5. Anton Cooper and Sam Gaze – take gold and silver in the Mountain Bike Cross Country (2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, Scotland) Yeah.
  6. David Nyika – stuns the crowd to win boxing gold (2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, Scotland) Good – in a sport that is about as kosher as deceased, former South African Cricket Captain and failed pilots.
  7. All Blacks – Malakai Fekitoa and Colin Slade seal victory for the All Blacks in the final minute (All Blacks v Australia, Bledisoe Cup, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane) In a year of Houdini acts I’m as thrilled as anyone the All Blacks keep winning, bar for another Wayne Barnes piece of genius, I mean idiot patheticness.
  8. Kiwis – clinch the Four Nations in an epic 22-18 final win over Australia (Kiwis v Australia, Four Nations Tournament Final, Wellington Stadium, Wellington) This was a great match. Not only did we beat the Aussies twice in the tournament but we played really well. I’m sure, however, that there are really only two teams that could have won.
  9. Lydia Ko – wins US$1.5 million in one day (CME Globe Points Race and CME Group Tour Championship, Naples, Florida) Well, what to say. The kid has it all. Including a massive bank account. She wins. She looks like nothing bothers her. She plays a sport notoriously difficult to do well. Fuckin aye.
  10. Auckland City FC – make a fairy tale run in the FIFA Club World Cup (2014 FIFA Club World Cup, Morocco) They got 3rd. Get over it.

Is it wrong to say my favourite moment was the guy who caught the Tui $100,000 catch?
