Unsportsmanlike conduct

Well well well. Europe wins the Ryder Cup – what did I tell you?

I feel somewhat vindicated today. Very smug. A sort of “I told you so” satisfaction. The European team hammered the USA – again. And, then the egos came out. One in particular.

Over the last few years, I’ve grown to like Phil Mickelson because of his skill and seemingly endless charisma. But, today it’s gone. Rather than acknowledging the great play of the Europeans he singled out Tom Watson as the cause of the defeat. This to me is the epitome of bad sportsmanship. Don’t get me wrong – I think he possibly has a point. However, what one thinks and what one says should sometimes be two different things.  I’m reminded of the YouTube video below – to be specific forward to 2:30:

There are inside words and outside words!

I’m no fan of Tom Watson. I admire his record and his swing, but having McCord thrown out of The Masters for saying the greens had a bikini wax or similar, is petty at best.  But, what the USA needs is unity and it wouldn’t have mattered if Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones were the Captains of the team – they still would have been beaten by the better side. Mickelson should have known better. He has millions of fans who look up to him. Some of them will become great players and what can we look forward to? More blaming the coach/weather/bad equipment/shitty bed. Wouldn’t it be great to have the class of Nicklaus or Palmer or the sportsmanship of John Wooden. If the USA is to win more than 1 in 8 Ryder Cups they need to be the team that Europe has become.
