Hagley Nay? Hagley Yay!

] peterThanks Seth McFarlane…I hope you don’t mind I used your picture.  If you do, give me a whistle and I’ll offer you a beer and perhaps a bourbon.

Today marked the opening of the Hagley Oval’s Cricket Pavilion. A magnificent looking little structure to mirror the shape of the Port Hills. A cricket ground in the old style, surrounded by an embankment providing an intimate theatre for cricket. It’s done now and well done to those who got it through.
But, do you know what really grinds my gears? Those dickheads that tried to poo-poo it. What were they thinking? Hagley Park is massive and has many leisure sites available. It even had a small corner across the road from the hospital that seemed appropriate for the non-working Occupy Wall Street band-wagoners (?). Are these the same people that don’t want PE at school? The same John Minto-ites that protest anything because they can? Sport, and in particular cricket and rugby are part of the very fabric of this country. We have the World Cup of Cricket here next year and New Zealand’s second biggest city, after all it’s been through in the past 4 years, deserves a great sporting venue like this oval will be. I hope the nay-sayers will bugger off and leave us to have the traditions as well as the forethought to continue to be one of the world’s great sporting nations.
