American Sport

So, I went to the game…my beloved Magpies thumped Otago 41-0!!! Quite unbelievable really.  On to Bay of Plenty next week….not really a bay…more an elongated piece of curved coastline.

I got home in time to watch the sports news and saw the highlights of the Mayweather fight.  The guy is quite the athlete and mentally must be top notch.  47 wins and no losses. However, controversy was there. So, as my little brain wandered off again I thought of the last week in American sport.  NFL player hitting kids and wives. Mayweather getting bitten. Then I thought farther back…….Michael Vick, OJ Simpson, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and so on and so on. American sport is absolutely filled with controversial people. Oh yeah Michael Phelps.

Hark, WAIT! I hear. So is Australian sport. The NRL seems blessed with endless news stories for the journos to write. From switching codes and clubs to exploring interesting tastes in liquid. Wait just a minute, so is English, New Zealand, European etc etc.

Professional sport is rife with young men and women who know no different. They know not of a life outside of their sport and very little it seems of the consequence of breaking laws etc. Oh, Oscar Pistorius is another.  What have we bred?

I hope there can be a change for the better – I would love to see my son or daughter be a professional sports person – so long as they remain solid wee jokers 🙂
