The screamer was beaten in the US Open by Caroline Wozniacki. It seems Caro and Rory are doing well since breaking up. Is the screaming necessary? Probably not, but it certainly get people talking and polarises the audience.
Michael Sam was dropped by the St. Louis Rams. Sam is/was the only openly gay NFL player. One wonders when the gay bashing activists will start. I think even he realises he wasn’t quite good enough, but hopefully he can make it with another team.
My Magpies won the Ranfurly Shield from Counties, 51 weeks after losing to the same team. I hope we can hold on to it for a while. And so begins the provincial rivalry and chest puffing as my friends from Otago, even those who come from Hawkes Bay but played for Otago, tell us we will lose it. You know who you are.
Emma Twigg wins her first world championship in rowing. Another great Hawkes Bay sportsperson. Taking next year off though???
The schizophrenic Warriors thumped the under-performing Titans meaning if they win this weekend they’re in the top 8. Man it’s tough being a Warriors supporter!!
Finally, the All Blacks are in town charming the locals with numerous outings and photo ops. After their thrashing of the Wallabies last week they are once again the greatest team ever and the opinion pieces are rife with, well, opinion. One I saw was that Ma’a Nonu was the first choice 12. I’m not so sure. He is very good and a scary prospect for those marking him, but Ryan Crotty is a smooth and solid 12 in the mold of Warwick Taylor. They are very different players with remarkable skill sets providing New Zealand Rugby with great depth when you add old man Conrad, Malakai Fekitoa, Ben Smith and those waiting in the wings. Forgive the pun. My main concern comes at hooker and halfback. An ardent Hawkes Bay man, certainly not a Canterbury one, my contention is that Andy Ellis is the finest halfback in the country. And, Corey Flynn would have been my first choice hooker. Dane Coles is going to be a great player and Kevvy M has been a great player but I think Corey Flynn would’ve added plenty. Not to be.
Anyway, what the fuck would I know? An armchair critic at best, I’m only casting my opinion to those that care to listen. Who would you include in the All Blacks who aren’t there now? I look forward to the response!!
