Why?
I’m an opinionated bugger when I need to be, more to the point when it involves things I’m passionate about. The thing I am most passionate about is sport. Being a golf pro, former rugby player, rep swimmer, rep athlete, surf lifesaving dude (?), I think I’m relatively well qualified to offer an opinion on sports – all sports.
Granted, I’m no expert on the ins and outs of most sports but like any fan in NZ and the world, I have an opinion and would like to offer it. You, as the reader, may disagree with my points of view. You may become agitated with me…that’s cool, comment on the piece below each post. Sorry soccer fans I must confess to not knowing much about football at all.
So, to my first topic. The New Zealand Women’s Golf Open. Hardly an issue for the ladies to have an open championship. i just want to express from an insiders point of view how it was.
I caddied, you see, for San Diegan (See Anchorman) Beth Allen. A rather petite lady who belts the shit out of it, has a great short game and is a deadly putter. Beth and I managed to get to the last group on the last day to play with Anya Alvarez from Oklahoma and teen golf super-uber prodigy girl, Lydia Ko.
The crowd was pregnant with anticipation of a Ko repeat of her 2013 heroics. Cameras, phones whispering and people that hadn’t run in years scrambling to see. What I was expecting was an intense battle with top sports people going into a bubble of focus. What I got were three genuine ladies who were polite, engaging and could flat out play around a tough golf course. Unfortunately, none of the girls won – another talented Korean girl shot 63!!! and beat Lyds by one. Beth and Anya tied for third. Great stuff.
I guess my point is, the NZ Women’s Open is a fantastic tournament that is nothing without those players. What a great bunch of ladies and girls who can, as Johnny Miller would say, golf their ball. Get to see these girls play because they are awesome.
